Top- Notch Tuesday ~ Counting My Blessings

10. having more than one place that feels like home

Sometimes I feel like this is one of the luckiest things that can happen to you in your life. When I drive into Layton I feel like I'm coming home, but when I drive back to Logan I'm on my way home too. Down town Salt Lake feels like home to me because I was born there, and because my dad has worked in that city for a large chunk of my life. When I think about our little yellow house on Samuel's Pine Road in Chantilly, Virginia...that's home too. My parent's house in Layton. Every apartment I've had in Logan. USU's campus. I even remember the moment I first felt at home in Samoa...walking to the grocery store late at night in the dark and realizing I was perfectly relaxed. Some of my best friends' houses feel like home too. There are people who never really feel at home anywhere, who spend so much of their lives trying to find where they belong, and I've been lucky to have so many places that fit for me.

9. good books and music

Every day I'm thankful for people who write beautiful things. I get to major in reading beautiful words and thinking hard about them. And I have to have music on the entire time I'm doing it.

8. laughing

Laughing is my favorite thing to do. If I could choose one thing to have happen to me every day for the rest of my life...I would choose to laugh until it hurts every day. I like real-life slapstick. I like when people fall off their chairs or slip on the ice walking up the hill to campus. My life would be very bleak if I could not laugh at the weird things that happen to me every day.

7. work

I have had a job since I was 15. I'm thankful for the jobs I hated in high school because I learned a lot about being nice to people who aren't nice to you. Working at restaurants and at the mall taught me to be the person who makes someone's job easier, not harder.

I have been so blessed to have jobs during college that actually fit with my career plans. Teaching Supplemental Instruction for Sociology was hard, but it meant that I was already comfortable in front of a class when other teaching opportunities presented themselves.

And I love tutoring. I love hearing people's stories all day and finding out what's important to them. I love talking about writing. I even like sitting at the desk and supervising. I know that I'm incredibly lucky to work on campus and to have work off every weekend and holiday. My job is basically luxurious!

6. education

I go to Utah State University. That about sums it up! But really, I can't imagine having gone anywhere else. I have loved college so much. This university has given me so many opportunities and experiences that will always be important to me. I love learning, and I love learning about how to help people learn. Just going to school at all is a a huge, huge blessing...the fact that I go to a school I love and get to study something that excites me is even...more huge.

5. travel

I took me until college to realize how lucky I was to have parents who took me places. As a child I didn't fully appreciate the fact that my family had been to the Statue of Liberty together, climbed lighthouses, walked across the Golden Gate Bridge, stood next to Niagara Falls, crawled through the Mark Twain caves, stood next to the White House, and stayed in beach houses. Now I know that most people just go to Disneyland and that's it. Disneyland is great, but I'm thankful for parents who love to try new things and take us on a new trip every year. My life will always be different because my Dad fought so hard for me to get to Samoa. I'm also thankful that I've been able to travel with friends. Nothing brings you closer to someone faster than being in a car with them for 13 hours straight! If you already like them, that is. This one requires a LOT of pictures, apparently.

4. friends

I am thankful to still be close to friends from elementary school, junior high and high school, and every year of my college life. I have lived with a lot of girls. I feel blessed that so many of them have become such an important part of my life. These are the people who have been there for me through all my crazy ups and downs.

3. sisters

My five younger sisters are my best friends. They make me laugh harder than anything in this world and they are always willing to do crazy things with me. Abbie is the most loyal friend I could ever ask for. She always puts others above herself and comes to my rescue on a regular basis. Rachel inspires me every day with her determination and goodness, and makes me laugh every day with her crazy costumes, homemade Broadway musicals, and general cheery disposition. Lauren is my hero because she's not afraid to be herself, even in 7th grade. She's not afraid to be smart and to say that she wants to be a scientist. I would vote for her for president. Hannah melts my heart every time she talks about wanting to be a mom, and every time I see her acting motherly with her younger cousins and neighbor kids. And sometimes when I hear Janie's extra-loud voice on my phone when she leaves me a message ("This is Janie by the way.") I almost start crying because I can't handle the cuteness overload. Every one of them is so filled with unique gifts and traits that makes our family US.

2.  parents

Okay, now I'm getting emotional! What can I even say? My parents gave me everything else on this list. They gave me a house filled with books and music and laughter. They gave me stories. They gave me my sisters and all of the adventures we've had together.

My mom is the smartest person I know. She could've been anything she wanted, and she wanted to be my mom. She is good at celebrating and making little things fun. She's genuine. People feel loved and important around her because she is sincerely interested in their life stories. My mom taught me to laugh at myself, to keep things in perspective, trust my own choices, and to learn from it all. I can honestly say that I want to be her when I grow up.

My dad has always supported every one of my dreams. I've inherited his excitement for life plans and travel ideas. He has always had seriously busy church and work assignments, but he has always put our family first. He taught me not to be afraid of the world but to fully experience everything it has to offer. Everywhere we go, people want to give my dad free stuff. Like...weekends in their fancy vacation homes. He always finds the best parking spaces. I fully believe that miracles happen around my dad because he expects life to be amazing and for people to be good.

1. God

Every once in a while I say to God, "What is  going to happen to me? Can't you just tell me where my life is going? What is my future supposed to be?" And He always says, "Haven't I always taken care of you? Haven't I always turned every heartbreak into an opportunity? Just keep moving one step at a time."

When I decided to go on a mission, I was worried that I'd forget about the experience I had and change my mind back and forth every day until my call actually came. But I'm so thankful to say that every single day I've had little reassurances that I made the right decision. Preparing to go to the temple has been the absolute best thing for me. I've always been freaked out about going through the temple, but now I can see the temple as a symbol of everything God wants to give to me, and I know it's even more important than going on a mission. It's almost like I can feel God's excitement for me...like He is so anxious to give me the blessings of the temple so that I can grow and progress and be close to Him. Sometimes I just can't believe He is letting me go on a mission!

I am so thankful for this beautiful life, and for all of the people who make it that way. Happy Thanksgiving!

November Nonsense

November has been flying by for me. I really can't believe it's almost Thanksgiving! Here are some of the interesting things that have happened to me this month:

1. We adopted a grandma! My roommates and I adopted a grandma named Polly at a retirement home. We have gone to visit her four times and she is sooo great. I always feel inspired after we go talk to her. She is losing her hearing and her eyesight and it's pretty hard for her to move around, but she is still making goals and learning new things. She is taking Spanish and learning sign language, she's a good visiting teacher, she goes to the temple every week, she collects Coke paraphernalia...she is just great.

2. We created a thankful tree All month we have been adding to this tree on our wall. I think of new things to be thankful for every day because I'm having a beautiful life!

3. Friends and Firehouse Mallory and Kaitlin visited Logan and we had somewhat of a reunion at Firehouse. I love laughing with these people so much and I'm glad Mal and Kaitlin would make such a journey to have dinner with us! :)

4. I participated in making dry-ice bombs I've never made a dry ice bomb before. They're pretty loud, especially when you throw them into the water in the canyon. I really hope we didn't kill any ducks, because I've already done that this year. The canyon is so beautiful at night. I love the stars and the moon and the shadowy mountains...and I love explosions.

5. I went speed dating I don't even know what else to say about this. It is what it is. It's one of those things I've always wanted to try just to say that I did it...but I did not find true love.

6. I voted!! I am really proud about this one. I voted in my first presidential election! I waited in line for one hour to vote, but afterwards I just felt so lucky that I was able to.  A very small percentage of the people, let alone women, who have lived on this earth have been able to do so. So grateful for all the woman who fought so hard for my right to vote. 'MERICA!

7. I finished this.... I don't want to talk about it.

8. My youngest sister was baptized She is such a great kid. Abbie, Rachel, Lauren and I sang "Amazing Grace" at her baptism. Janie just beamed and beamed all day.

9. We went sledding The day of Jane's baptism, Layton had the best sledding snow I've ever seen. It was the PERFECT snow day.

10. I was in an underwater music video I really wish I had a picture to illustrate this. My roommates and I were in a music video that was filmed at the Sport's Academy in the pool. We got to try an oxygen bar, get in the pool in our dresses, and dance around to the DJ that was in the corner of the pool. It was so much fun!

11. I registered for my last semester of classes I don't know what emotion to feel about this. I had had three required classes left - Teaching social studies, Assessment and Curriculum Planning, and Teaching Literacy. I know, I don't want to take any of those classes either. I love being in the classroom, but I am soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo sick of taking teaching methods classes. Gag me with a spoon. So I'm also taking Langston Hughes, Mythology and Raquetball just for fun.

12. I tried Mexican hot chocolate Some friends and I had a lovely bonfire at second dam in the canyon. It's nice to be outside while we still can, and the food was stellar. I also loved hanging out with Lauren, Aubree and Mckenna afterwards because sometimes girls nights are needed!

13. I finally went off the high dive. Lauren was a swim buddy this week and since she was there I finally was brave enough to go off the high dive. I dived beautifully, I'm sure.

14. Basketball season! The best part of living in Logan is definitely Aggie basketball! The team isn't looking extremely impressive, but I love being in the Spectrum with people I like.

Last night after the game, we made sugar cookies and watched Harry Potter. And blew smoke rings with incense? Sometimes I can't explain my life.

Today has been a great Sunday! I taught relief society, which I actually like doing, and we visited two different retirement homes. Old people are our hobby. Tonight it VERY suddenly started POURING rain, thunder and lightning included. Basically everyone in my apartment complex ran outside to enjoy it. Spinning around in the rain (even if it was only for about one minute because of the freezing factor) made me feel blessed. Blessed to live where I live and to be young. And November's not even over yet!

Top-Notch Tuesday - A Word From Ninth Graders

Today's Top-Notch Tuesday post is dedicated to the 9th grade English students at Logan High School. They are smart. They are good. They are hilarious. They have important things to say.

They've been bravely trudging their way through The Odyssey, and I wanted them to find ways to connect Odysseus' journey to their own lives. Otherwise, what's the point.

I gave them a list of "autobiography" questions to answer about their own lives. After they'd written for while, I had them put a star next to things they had written that could represent a journey in their own lives. We made a list on the board of possible "journeys" a 9th grader may have already been on.

Some of these kids have already been through a lot. Some of them haven't. And they've all been thrown together in one classroom and asked to make sense of a story that's hundreds of years old.

I've been reading through the thoughts they shared with me on their autobiography worksheets. Their answers are top-notch. Here are some that inspired me, made me laugh, or made me think.

1. Describe the place where you grew up.

"Las Vegas was an old dry desert, but we had a pool."

"It had a big backyard and a barn. And there was a swing set. We had a dog named Missy and a cat named Tomas."

"It was a small one room apartment in Fullerton, California. The place was very ghetto. There was police at that place 24/7. Also a lot of gangs and drug dealers. It wasn't the best place but we moved after I turned eight."

"I've lived in seven houses. In Maryland, I lived in a moldy, old, broken house. Then we moved to two townhouses and it was so humid."

2. What is the most difficult situation you have ever faced?

"To either move in with my dad or move to Layton. After my mom died I lost trust in my dad, so he gave me two options."

"One of the most difficult situations I have ever faced was to not sleep for a whole 24 hours. I didn't fall asleep because my sister said she would give me ten dollars if I did it."

"Women. I get too attached too easily, so when a bond is broken, it's tough."

"Choosing between right and wrong."

"Trying to make a decision when there wasn't really a wrong or right."

"When my parents divorced, I thought my world would end."

3. Tell me about a turning point in your life.

"Moving from junior high to high school. I didn't know high school would be as hard as it is. So many people are rude and disrespectful. But some people are nice."

"We moved to a new house. My mom and stepdad don't fight as much. I came to Logan to get away from some problems. I don't get in fights as much."

"When I decided to be happy."

"When I moved to America and decided to stay here. I had to start a new life, make new friends, and leave family."

"This summer was a turning point in my life because I grew up a little I guess you could say and finally understand where my parents come from when they talk to me."

"When I made the decision to do what I thought was right instead of doing what others thought was right."

"A big turning point in my life was when I noticed that my little cousin wanted to be like me cause I was like his role model and I have chosen to be a good example."

4. Who is an influential person in your life?

"A very influential person in my life is Beethoven because his music taught me the glory of music."

"My mom supports me in every good thing I do and helps me a lot in school."

"I love my mom very much, although she does severely annoy me sometimes."

"My parents. Mainly because they are the most selfless people and came here all the way from Mexico just to give my siblings and I a better life and future. And it paid off."

"It is my Uncle Juan, he influenced me to keep good grades and go to college with a scholarship like he did."

"In my life the most influential person is myself because I feel that everybody should choose for themselves."

"Taylor Swift! because I feel like her songs are so personal and describe my life. Like she gets me and expresses what I'm feeling in her music."

After reading through these, I wanted to call all of these kids' parents and say, "You probably think your teenager doesn't listen to you, or doesn't care about you, but they do. You shape their whole world."

We read a poem in class today, and I wasn't sure how the students were going to react to that activity. We read it line by line as a class and then I had them listen to the poet read the poem herself on a recording. I was very surprised to find that as soon as Mary Oliver's voice filled the classroom, all 36 9th graders were silent and attentive.

The Journey - Mary Oliver

One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice–
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
“Mend my life!”
each voice cried.
But you didn’t stop.
you knew what you had to do
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at  the very foundations,
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late enough,
and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do–
determined to save
the only life you could save.

Ninth graders are smart. They have things to say. They are top-notch.

Top-Notch Tuesday - Favorite Plays

Today's Top-Notch Tuesday is dedicated to my favorite plays. To clarify, this is the list of the best plays I've read. The list of my favorite plays I've seen would be completely different.

I read plays when I'm hungry for dialogue. Plays are a nice change of pace in my reading, and I can usually finish them more quickly than novels. In some ways, plays give me more to think about than novels do. Here are some favorites.

A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry

"Seem like God didn’t see fit to give the black man nothing but dreams – but He
did give us children to make them dreams seem worth while." (1.1.206)

As You Like It by William Shakespeare

All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players:
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,
(2.7.139)

Fences by August Wilson
"I love this woman. I love this woman so much it hurts.
I love her so much...I done run out of ways of loving her." (1.1.173)

Our Town by Thornton Wilder

"My, wasn't life awful--and wonderful."

Inherit the Wind by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee

"Yes. The individual human mind. In a child's power to master the multiplication table,
there is more sanctity than in all your shouted "amens" and "holy holies" and "hosannas."
An idea is a greater monument than a cathedral."

Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett

"We're all born mad. Some remain so."

"Master Harold"...and the boys by Athol Fugard

“It was a “Whites Only” bench. You were too young, too excited to notice then.
But not anymore. You don’t have to sit up there by yourself. You know what that
bench means now, and you can leave it any time you choose."

Brighton Beach Memoirs by Neil Simon

"Puberty is OVER! Onward and upward"

A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams

"Stellaaa!"

The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde

"I never travel without my diary. One should always have
something sensational to read in the train."- Act 2

Henry IV, Part 1 by William Shakespeare

"Art thou to break into this woman's mood,
Tying thine ear to no tongue but thine own!" (1.3.9)

And the ones I want to read next....
for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf by Ntozake Shange

The Mountaintop by Katori Hall

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead by Tom Stoppard

Another HalloWIN

The past week or so has been absolutely fantastic! October is probably my 3rd favorite month of the year. I feel like something fun as happened every day!

Last week....
Monday - pumpkin walk

Alexa and I went on a roommate date to the pumpkin walk. Logan rule: never miss the pumpkin walk! It never disappoints. My favorite scenes this year were from Hunger Games and Just Dance.

Tuesday - Kim's birthday

My roommate Kim turned 20! It was also the first snow day of the year, so we began our celebration with some hot chocolate at Starbucks...
...then dressed up for skate night at the fun center! Such great times!
Kim wished pretty hard on her pretty birthday cake! I am so glad she was born. She's the best!

Wednesday - pie night
Lauren, Aubree L, and Brianna joined me for some free pie at Village Inn. It's the best break after work Wednesday night when I don't want to go home for homework! Especially when I go with hilarious people.

Thursday - dinner and a show

On Thursday I had to drive down to good old Ltown for my mission doctors appointments.
That awkward moment when everyone else in the waiting
room is also holding mission papers. #askthemissionaries

That wasn't the funnest time of my life but with great friends I can make a trip to Layton worthwhile. Mallory very generously drove to Layton to go to a movie with me and Aubree. Loved it. One of those rare moments when I like the movie just as much as the book. Probably because the author wrote the screenplay, so all was exactly as it should be. We had dinner at Red Robin and talked about Mal's mission call to Texas! I am soooo proud of her!

 Friday - basketball opening night!

I am in this picture somewhere. I love Utah State because we completely FREAK out over an exhibition game against Grand Canyon...who has even heard of them. 76-44. So happy that basketball season has officially begun! basketball > football

Saturday -Pumpkins, fried ice cream, and The Howl

I had to drive home AGAIN so that the doctor could take literally 15 seconds to tell me that...in a shocking turn of events.... I don't have tuberculosis. But it turned out to be worth the drive because when I got home the fam was headed to the pumpkin patch! We took this cute little hay ride to pick our pumpkins. The woman in charge at the farm told us it would be "funner than Lagoon." Depends how you look at it I guess.

Back in Logan, Alexa, Aubree and I headed to Cafe Sabor for their free fried ice cream deal. I have to say that my heart will always have a bias towards Pepperbellys' fried ice cream, but it was still good. Then it as time to get ready to Howl it up!

We danced, saw a male contortionist, got tattooed, and watched people we know get hypnotized. Some of us even held tarantulas and scorpions. I have to say that I prefer the Howl to have a live concert...but still fun.

Sunday - leaf crunching

Do you know how many leaves there are in the Logan cemetery right now? A lot.

And this week...
Back to skate night!

Let's talk about how Kim, Cody and I all won free skating for next time at the Halloween skate night. Yeahhh! So much fun.

Finally...ACTUAL HALLOWEEN!

I wasn't completely sold on going home for Halloween night, what with all the back and forth I've been doing for doctors' appointments. But then I realized...the next time I'll be able to have Halloween with my family will be three years from now. My mom cooks more for Halloween than she does for Christmas. This is not an exaggeration. She decorates the house and the yard and makes a Halloween feast. Halloween is a family favorite. Had to be there!

Janie: karate kid; me: peacock; Hannah: evil queen; Abbie: Tippi Hedrin from The Birds; Marian (our favorite cousin-once-removed): strawberry; Rachel and Lauren: loofahs

Let's talk about how great my sisters are. Rachel and Lauren dressed up like loofahs and turned the car into Justin Bieber's bathtub. Who does that?

We took my youngest sisters and my cousin's two little girls trick-or-treating. Since it was warm they lasted much longer than usual! Rachel and I opted to skooter around in our tutus.

My favorite part of Halloween was how hard Rachel and I were laughing while the kids sorted their candy. My sisters really are my very best friends. What a perfect Halloween night!
